Activated charcoal, or simply carbon, has been around for thousands of years. It’s list of health benefits is only part of the wonders of this extremely simple substance.
Activated charcoal is made by charring wood like willow bark, and then exposing it to an oxidizing gas or steam to make the material extremely porous. Carbon is one of the only substances that is 100% alkaline, and is spinning with electrons that draw other materials to it. The ability to attract other substances to its surface and hold them there is called “adsorption” (not absorption). Activated charcoal can adsorb thousands of times its own weight in harmful substances, in fact: one teaspoonful of activated charcoal has a equivalent surface area of more than 10,000 square feet.
So What Can Activated Charcoal Do?
1. Detox Your Body
In the event of an accidental poisoning, or exposure to drugs (legal or illegal) adding a teaspoon of active carbon to a glass of water can help pull toxins out of your body. This is the same treatment they do in hospitals for chemical exposure.2. Clean Your Teeth
Plaque that builds up on teeth is highly acidic, so using a completely alkaline substance like activated charcoal can clean your teeth better than any synthetic substance on the market. It can even remove old stains like coffee or tobacco stains.3. Digestive Aid
Carbon supports all aspects of digestion, and even counteracts flatulence. It is also great for cleansing the colon and digestive tract.4. Great for Skin
You can make a face mask with active charcoal, water, and a squeeze of honey. just mix the three ingredients together until you have a paste, and apply to your face, and leave on for 15-30 minutes and let the charcoal pull all of the toxins out of your skin.
