Dark chocolate could be the key to improving attention and alertness. “Chocolate is indeed a stimulant, and it activates the brain in a special way,” said Dr. Larry Stevens. “It can increase brain characteristics of attention, and it also significantly affects blood pressure levels.”

The study was published and sponsored by the Hershey Company. This study was the first to investigate the influence chocolate has on the brain and attention using the EEG technique. With the EEG, taking images of the brain’s activity while performing cognitive tasks are simple. Stevens and his team acquired 122 volunteers that were aged between 18 and 25. They were given different options: chocolate with high cacao content, chocolate with low cacao content, and high cacao chocolate with added L-theanine, high sugar water, low-sugar water, or just regular water.

The EEG activity was examined for blood pressure and mood before and after consuming one of the options while performing certain tasks. The group that ate chocolate with 60 percent cacao and the one with added L-theanine outperformed the groups that didn’t eat dark chocolate at all. “A lot of us in the afternoon get a little fuzzy and can’t pay attention, particularly students, so we could have a higher cacao content chocolate bar and it would increase attention,” Stevens said.
