A 2005 study by the European Consumer Organization states that a total of more than 350 different chemicals and allergens were detected after testing 74 air-freshening products. The chemicals included benzene, formaldehyde, styrene and phthalates.

You might be wondering what to do then? Well, the solution is right in your home. You can make your own air freshener using some simple ingredients.

Depending on the recipe you use, you can cover up the unwanted odor with better-smelling scents or neutralize the bad odor.

The recipe using essential oils for air freshener spray will mask bad odors with the pleasant, strong smell of the oils. You can use any essential oils.

Unlike synthetically made scented oils, essential oils do not cause headaches or respiratory problems.

Here are recipes for two homemade air fresheners to help you breathe happy without the toxic mess.
