We all know the controversy that comes with the medical marijuana topic. Well, New York hospitals are going to be treating their patients with it.

Many hospitals in the state of New York have been supporting marijuana growers for medical purposes. The “New York Times” have reported that while the State Health Department wasn’t prepared to reveal the list of applicants, many hospitals are coming forward to announce they have established partnerships that will allow them to provide medical marijuana to patients if they have an awarded license.

North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System has revealed they have teamed up with Silverpeak Academy, which is a medical marijuana company based in Colorado, to form a new company – Silverpeak NY. The goal of the partnership is to ensure patients have access to medical cannabis. The hospital “recognizes the importance of our patients having access to every legal option to manage the symptoms of their illness, if there is clinical evidence to support marijuana’s use for the condition,” said Michael Dowling, the hospital’s chief executive.

Many other medical organizations are announcing they are also planning to offer medical marijuana that are included in their health services. The University of Rochester Medical Center and Manhattan’s Mount Sinai Health System told New York Times they are negotiating with companies that have been applying for licenses to bring medical marijuana to facilities. The URMC chief operating officer, Peter Robinson, said the hospital has not yet entered a contract with a specific company, but they are “positively encouraged” that a working relationship will be established if the licensing process goes in their favor.

The Governor of New York, Andrew M. Cuomo, and the New York Legislature call this the Compassionate Care Act. The DOH is committed to implementing a comprehensive, safe and effective medical marijuana program that meets the needs of New Yorkers. This program will ensure that medical marijuana is available for certified patients with serious conditions and is dispensed and administered in a way that protects public health and safety. Medical marijuana will be available to patients with conditions like cancer, HIV/AIDS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, damage to nervous tissue of the spinal cord, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, neuropathies and Huntington’s disease.
