Three years ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. While doing 6 months of chemo, I notice that at least 75 % of the people were there because of a second cancer. Last year, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 melanoma then this year it become Stage 4. I swear I felt it was due to my chemo treatment ..it all makes sense now about those second cancer patients while I was doing chemo.

I have heard medical doctors tell patients that, yes, taking chemo is betting that the chemo kills the cancer before it kills you. These doctors also look for other methods to treat the cancer before using chemo. But when the cancer *will* kill you if you do nothing and the chemo has even an okay chance at killing the cancer first, a patient facing death usually opts for the chemo.

Yes, chemo is toxic. So is any pharmaceutical in large enough doses. You always have to way the risk against the gain. Chemo gave us 4 years with a cousin suffering from pediatric cancer. Without the chemo, he would have died within a week as the fast-growing cancer put pressure on his heart. Chemo is the reason my mom is still alive. Her cancer would likely have metastasized without her chemo. She would be dead now without the treatments her oncologist very carefully administered. Is chemo a risk? Yes! Is a risk worth taking for some people? Again, yes.
