Onychophagia, also known as nail biting, can damage the skin around the nail, which can cause fungal nail infections. Nail biting is a common stress-relieving habit; people may bite their nails in times of stress or excitement, or if they’re bored. It can be a learned behavior that they learn from family members. But, it is most commonly known as a nervous habit.
People may bite their nails without realizing they’re doing it. Nail biting includes biting the cuticles, the soft tissue surrounding the nail as well as the nail itself. When people bite their nails, they are exposing themselves to potentially harmful germ that could be residing under the finger nail.
Perfectionist like to have everything a certain way and it has to be perfect. Body Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRB) which include: biting nails, thumb sucking and pulling hair, are demonstrated in people who have BFRBs they are unable to relax and perform tasks at a normal pace. Perfectionists are easily frustrated, impatient, bored and dissatisfied when they can’t progress or succeed in certain things. There are many practices that can be done to prevent nail biting, like nail polish, chewing gum, getting manicures, wrapping fingernails with tape or using a toothpick to clean under the nails. But, if you want something that more than that, then you’ll have to find your trigger. Dig deep and find out why you are biting your nails. Once you find out the cause of your nail biting, you can target it to stop.
