Learn how to make your own all natural lip balm with this recipe. Check out the article we found over at Top 10 Home Remedies.
Treat your dry, chapped lips with your own homemade lip balm made with natural ingredients. It is a great alternative to commercial lip balms loaded with synthetic chemicals.
This recipe also includes a little castor oil because it leaves a soft, glossy shine on the lips. To give it a nice fragrance and a refreshing tinge, you can also add a few drops of peppermint essential oil.
How to make your homemade lip balm
Things you will need:
- Beeswax
- Extra-virgin coconut oil
- Castor oil
- Raw honey
- Peppermint or any other essential oil of your choice (optional)
- A microwave or double-boiler
- A grater or peeler
- A mixing spoon or even a popsicle stick to stir
- A mixing bowl
- Sterilized lip balm containers or tubes
Steps
1. Shred a ½-ounce bar of beeswax using a grater or peeler and transfer it into a bowl.
2. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of extra-virgin coconut oil. (Ideally, the proportion of beeswax to coconut oil should be 1:2.)
3. Add 1 to 1½ teaspoons of castor oil.
4. Melt this mixture in a microwave or a double-boiler.
5. Add ½ to 1 tablespoon of raw honey.
6. Optionally, add 4 or 5 drops of peppermint or any other essential oil of your choice.
7. Mix it well and quickly transfer it into your lip balm containers before the mixture cools and hardens.
A single batch of this recipe should be enough to fill 4 to 5 small lip balm containers.
Store your homemade lip balm in a cool, dry place. It should last for several months. If your homemade lip balm turns out softer and oilier, you can also use it as a cuticle cream to soften and moisturize your cuticles.
