Experts have long known a relationship exists between stress, blood sugar and belly fat. Insulin increases in those people who suffer from chronic stress. This leads to weight gain, insulin resistance and ultimately diabetes.

When you are stressed, your adrenal glands release hormones like cortison and adrenaline. Due to their flooding in your system, your heart rate raises, increasing your blood pressure, making your blood more likely to clot, damaging your brain’s memory center, increasing belly fat storage and generally wreaking havoc on your body.

There are some consequences due to this hormonal havoc. For example, when you forget to eat your breakfast, you take a gigantic coffee along with a muffin.

The caffeine in coffee increases your stress hormones called catecholamines. The stress response elicits cortisol, which in combination with the sugar in that muffin, increases insulin. Insulin on the other hand increases inflammation and this makes you feel lousy. Cortisol and adrenalin, stress hormones, are also increased by the sugar in the muffin. This means that sugar literally jacks up your stress hormones, even when you are not stressed.

As a result of all this, you have created the perfect storm for hormonal hell that leaves you miserable, tired and storing fat.

Here are some techniques and tools that can help you to manage stress effectively.

  1. Learn New Skills

You should try to learn new skills like progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, biofeedback or make love, watch a sunset, take a hot bath, walk on the beach or in the woods.

  1. Change Your Beliefs

Consider refraiming your point of view on common situations, examine your beliefs, attitudes in order to reduce stress.

  1. Sleep

Prioritize sleep because lack of sleep increases stress hormones. Get your 8 hours of sleep no matter the obligations, and if you missed your sleep, take  a nap.
